Cinema – Why We May Ask You For ID

Cinema age ratings, mandated by local licensing authorities and enforced by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), are legally binding, preventing cinemas from admitting underage viewers.

If you are lucky enough to look young for your age, you may be asked for ID.

Staff can refuse entry if a customer’s age is in doubt and will face fines for violations.

12A: Children under 12 may only watch if accompanied by an adult (18+),          who takes responsibility.

15: Strictly for ages 15 and over.

18: Strictly for adults.

Legal Enforcement

Licensing Laws: Cinemas must adhere to these ratings as part of their operating license. Admitting a minor to a higher-rated film is illegal and can lead to prosecution.

Staff Responsibility: Staff are legally required to uphold these ratings and can, and will, refuse entry to anyone failing to meet the age requirement.
